Greetings from Brussels, Belgium! I am here with my lovely boyfriend for a few days!
We arrived around dusk last night and had a relaxed evening. We ate dinner at the Boston Steakhouse. I had salmon and frites with Bernaise, and it was the best Bernaise sauce I've ever had.
Afterwards we grabbed a few essentials from the market before going back to the room. I crashed at 21:00 local time, which is embarassingly early, but I was tired! Last week was a huge week- I had exams, papers, a photo shoot for work, and submitted all of my summer internship applications! To finish everything before my trip, I slept roughly five hours of sleep per night for the past ten days. I was so glad to get some rest! After 13 hours of sleep, I was ready to start my day!
I took a shower in the hilariously small shower. I have traveled to quite a few places, but this is the smallest bathroom I've ever seen. The bathroom is about three feet wide and maybe seven feet long. This houses the toilet, towel rack, sink and shower. My boyfriend and I had brunch at Pulp, a local chain restaurant that serves pastries, fruits, and makes juice and smoothies. I had a pain au raisin and orange mango juice. We headed for the grand market after brunch, but found it wasn't much of a market. I photographed the area and explored the streets. Around 13:30 we stopped for waffles, which was an excellent decision! I had a Belgian waffle smothered with melted Belgian chocolate, and it was absolutely delicious.
We toured a cathedral and then went to a small market (an actual market). Many of the vendors sold jewelry, scarves, hats, and small crafts. There was one scarf I particularly liked, but my darling boyfriend talked me out of buying. Apparently I "have enough scarves". My mom is probably reading this thinking "You do have too many scarves!" as she frequently voices this opinion. I'm considering returning and getting it, though.
Later this afternoon we went to the Parc du Cinquantenaire. This is the area around large archway in Brussels with the Belgian flag hanging from the center. We went to Cinquantenaire Art Museum and looked at exhibits until it closed. Then went back to the room and relaxed for a bit before heading to dinner.
We ate at a restaurant and tea room that offered a variety of dishes. I had a turkey sandwich and frites, with 0.70€ of ketchup. Yes, I was charged for ketchup. Very different from America where they throw 15 ketchup satchets in a bag with a small serving of fries! Anyhow, it was quite good. After dinner I treated myself to some macarons, which I have never tried before tonight. I bought a chocolate macaron and a coffee macaron. A macaron is a small circular dessert pastry with ganache between two meringue-based shells. I was surprised by how soft they were, as they appear crispy. The chocolate was much better, but both were scrumptious! I'll have to get more before I leave!
After a long day of walking, we went back to the room to unwind. Brussels nightlife seems a bit obsolete, as many stores close by 20:00, and I don't really drink, so I have no business hanging around a pub.
Tomorrow my handsome boyfriend and I will be journeying to Bruges for a day trip! I apologize for the poor picture quality. I do not have my laptop with me, so I am blogging from my phone! More photos from my trip will be posted when I return home to London!
