Hope everyone had an enjoyable Monday! I had such a difficult time getting myself up this morning, but once I did, my day was great. I had an exciting class this morning and went to work in the afternoon. Work flew by (as it always does on my half days), but I learned at work that I will be going to fashion week! I am so excited! I will be sorting out the details later this week at work!
In preparation for fashion week and the coming Spring weather (just kidding that doesn't exist in London), I think it is an appropriate time to reflect on (what is in my objective, personal opinion) the Best and Worst collections from Summer Spring 2014! Today I will post about the best collections, and tomorrow's post will reflect on the most dreck collections that plagued the runway for SS14.
Best Collections
No. 5: Alberta Ferretti
Certainly one of the most underrated designers in the industry right now (in an industry where name is almost everything). Alberta Ferretti is an Italian designer and dressmaker who has been consistently delivering strong collections that improve each season (although I'm a huge fan of her AW 09 collection).
The clean, crisp lines and effortless elegance of the dresses make them essential for this coming season. While the silhouettes are right on trend, such as a crop top paired with a high-waisted skirt, the color scheme and pattern are an innovative use of floral and bright colors.
No. 4 : Dior
I know it's so glib to put an established fashion house on the list, but Dior delivered.
If you ever wanted to know how to make pastels work for Spring (and not look like an Easter Egg), watch the Dior SS14 Fashion Show. From head to toe, each look was perfection. The lavish, beaded necklaces draped over silk blouses in exquisite colour pairings was my favourite moment. I highly recommend watching the entire show.
No. 3: Alexander McQueen
Alexander McQueen is a luxury line established in 1992. McQueen is known for his eccentric taste and was taken from the fashion world too soon in 2011. Sarah Burton took over as creative director after his untimely death. Many were skeptical of her ability to lead the line, but established herself as the designer of Kate Middleton's wedding dress.
As always, McQueen ignored the rule and trends and presented a gorgeous, innovative collection. I particularly loved the use of feathers, as ostrich feathers are huge right now. While this is certainly not my favourite McQueen collection, it is well executed, creative, and bold. The rich, dark colours are a daring move for a spring collection, but the skin-bearing cuts of the garments break up the dark colours and earn McQueen a spot in the Top 3 Best Collections. Also, the campaign with Kate Moss is one of the best McQueen campaigns ever done.
No. 2: Dolce & Gabbana
Dolce & Gabbana is an established Italian fashion line, and every in the world has heard of it. Dolce and Gabbana were convicted of income tax evasion in fall of 2013, so this is tentatively their last collection for an unknown period of time.
The sheer number of looks is incredible, but the attention to detail was unprecedented for SS14. The collection is so beautiful, so cohesive, and blatantly inspired by their conviction. The use of gold and coins paired with flowers and landscapes was lovely.
No. 1: Louis Vuitton
If you have never seen a classic monogrammed LV bag on the street, you've probably not been paying attention. Everyone has seen this bag. Everyone. Which is why I was so reluctant to give the title of Best SS14 Collection to Vuitton- but Marc Jacobs deserves it.
Marc Jacob was creative director of Louis Vuitton for a number of years, but announced that he would be leaving to focus on his line, Marc by Marc Jacobs. I am very glad he made the choice to leave Vuitton, as many creative directors in the industry seem unable to manage more than one line effectively. The set was amazing, as it was a combination of all the sets of the past shows he had done. The colour scheme was black and navy, a dark palette which resembled a funeral. The collection was so off-trend, which is probably why I am so fond of it. Jacobs used that moment to showcase his ability and end his time at Vuitton with
