Go Insane, Throw Some Glitter, Make it Rain

Hi Fashionators!

I hope you all had a lovely week! Sorry for not posting, I've been insanely busy. Since I've been neglecting my blog a bit the last few weeks, but hope to return to posting more regularly.

Monday and Tuesday were filled with plenty of work and chores. Wednesday I enjoyed a morning visiting the V&A. I spent lots of time looking at clothes on display in the Fashion section as they rotate somewhat frequently. When I went looking for the Photography gallery, I learned that part of it was closed because a new exhibit is opening April 5th. "The Glamour of Italian Fashion" will be a installation about the history of Italian fashion, and of course, I will be going to see it. After looking through the jewellry room, I headed outside to get some fresh air and relax by the fountain, but instead, ended up photographing it. I have been really inspired by the movement of water ever since seeing Marilyn Minter's photography for the 2009 Jimmy Choo campaign. I really love the series of photos, but don't know what to do with them, as I normally photograph landscapes, people, or shoes.

I enjoyed photographing other areas of the V&A, particularly the light fixture that I mentioned in a previous post that was made by Bocci.

Wednesday afternoon I visited the British Museum and enjoyed a bit of hot tea, as it was a very cold and rainy day. Thursday was spent working and doing laundry- growing up really is overrated in some regards. I resent that I've let myself get in the swing of things in London, as I feel that it's taking away my desire for spontaneity. I don't want to get stuck in a cycle of working, writing papers, doing laundry and buying groceries. While all these things are necessary, I don't want them to overtake my life. I know it sounds odd, but it's so easy to get stuck in a routine.

Anyhow, I left the office early today (I'd worked all my hours!) and met my boyfriend and went to Camden Market. I'd never been, so I was unsure what to expect. At first all I could notice were the cheap designer knock-offs and London paraphernalia for as far as the eye could see, but soon approached the main market. Various booths and vendors were arranged about the area and were selling jewellry, scarves, vintage items, and of course, delicious food.

My boyfriend and I decided to split what initially appeared to be an ice cream sandwich. We didn't really know what it was, but everyone was eating them. We went into Chin Chin Labs and ordered a "Crown-Wich", which is ice cream between two Crownies. Crownies are essentially cookie-shaped brownies, also known as the food of the gods. I was excited and everything (because food is amazing, obviously), but I fell in love with the food once I realized how the ice cream was made. Chin Chin Labs prepares all of their ice cream when you order by using liquid nitrogen to make the ice cream. I don't know the science behind their magical ice cream formula, but it's some of the best ice cream I've ever tasted. The vanilla was so delicious and the ice cream wasn't overly sweet, which allowed it to be paired with a sweet crownie. On top of the amazing desserts, the workers were so nice. They were excited when I asked if I could take photos (you wouldn't believe how many people say "no" in a really angry way) and were so incredibly friendly! Anyone in the London area has to make a trip to Camden to get some of this ice cream- my boyfriend started planning when we could return before we'd finished our Crown-Wich.

After spending some time in Camden, my boyfriend took me to the Burlington Arcade. I had not been before today, and he insisted that he show me around the area. I was amazed by the gorgeous window displays of endless diamonds, emeralds, pearls, and fine jewellry. Fine cashmere sweaters and leather gloves were perfectly arranged in the windows- it was a work of merchandising genius. Each shop had their best on display in their windows- inviting only the wealthiest to enter the store to make a purchase. I was overwhelmed with excitement when I saw the Leica Camera shop, as I have only heard about Leica Cameras in books in magazines. I know that sounds ridiculous, but it's a European-based brand, and for whatever reason, has little American presence. I began to take a picture of the store front when I heard a woman talking to me. Initially scared, I don't really remember what I did. Few things are more terrifying than having one eye closed, the other eye looking through a lens that refigures the world, and having a stranger approach you in a large city as you hold your most prized possession in your hands. Fortunately, it was my art professor! The chances of seeing her at that exact shop at the exact time in a city of over 8 million has to be incredibly low, but what a lovely surprise it was! We adored the cameras and looked at a display of Rolex watches before she went home.

Before returning home, my boyfriend surprised me and took me to the London Eye! It was so lovely because we got there just as the sun was setting. When we went to get our tickets, the woman said "Oh! There's glitter in your hair! I love it!" At first I was confused, but then I remembered that I had used my fairy dust at work today. At Upper Street Shoes, we are not just employees; we are shoe fairies. I even have my own wand, wings, and fairy dust (jar of pink glitter). At work I was tripping over my words (it's Friday, I couldn't help it), so I brought out my fairy dust and threw a bit of it around my desk. What I forgot, though, is glitter is a contagious disease with no cure. I happily told the lady I was a shoe fairy at Upper Street, and that I needed a bit of fairy dust to make it to the weekend!

Seeing the London Eye as the sun was setting was incredible. I snapped as many photos as I could while I had such an amazing view of the city. Being at such a high altitude made me appreciate just how large London is and how historic it is. Seeing the different types of architecture at the same made me appreciate the diverse history and the bright future of this amazing city. In fact, it makes me want to never leave.

Wales & The Fascinator

Hello Fashionators!

Happy Sunday! So sorry I haven't been posting regularly, I've been busy since being sick. Thursday and Friday I went to work and was very busy catching up on projects. Friday afternoon I left with my boyfriend for Cariff, Wales for the weekend!

My boyfriend and I took a bus and arrived late Friday night to our hostel. We got plenty of sleep and woke up to a generous array of food provided for breakfast. I enjoyed a croissant and apple juice. After breakfast, my boyfriend and I headed to Cardiff Castle. We spent the morning touring the castle, the grounds, and learning about the history of Wales. We went to Bella Italiana for lunch and had calzones.

After lunch we went to the love spoon maker and William bought me a love spoon! In Welsh tradition, someone gives a loved one a love spoon to signify their affections. Centuries ago, the peasantry used love spoons as engagement presents, as they could not afford rings. While this wasn't exactly a proposal, it was a romantic gesture. He let me pick any love spoon I chose, so I chose a dark wooden spoon with a lock on the top of the handle. I liked the lock because a few weeks ago, Will and I put a lock on love lock bridge to signify a safe and permanent love. I know that's quite sappy, but it was fun to do.

We spent some time seeing the arcades until I found the John Lewis. John Lewis is an upmarket department store that sells men and women's clothes and accessories, home furnishings, and cosmetics. I was wondering around talking about how I didn't feel compelled to buy things every time I went shopping, but then I found the display of fascinators. I tried on quite a few before I decided on a nude coloured feathered fascinator. I chose it because the colour will go with many pieces, it's not extremely formal, but it makes a statement.

William and I spent the rest of the evening at an art museum. We enjoyed looking at Welsh ceramics and the history of Welsh pottery.

After a long day of walking, we went to the hostel and rested a bit before dinner. For dinner we ate at Revolution Kitchen. Will had a burger and I had fish & chips, which were quite good. We shared a chocolate brownie sundae for dessert! Yum!

Today we took a walk to Cardiff Bay. It was very windy, but aside from a short rain shower, the weather was gorgeous. We toured a war ship that is currently at the dock and talked to member of the Royal Navy about what they do, the ship and such. For lunch we ate at a restaurant called Top Gun where we both had their award winning fish & chips. I didn't mind doubling up on the fish and chips because I never eat them in London. For dessert we went to an ice cream parlor and shared a Hot Chocolate Muffin Sundae. It was a chocolate muffin cut in half with two scoops of vanilla ice cream on top with chocolate syrup on top. After lunch we toured the Pier House and the Senedd, where the Welsh Assembly meets and makes laws. We spent lots of time asking about the Welsh government, how it works in tandem with Welsh MPs in Westminster, and the history of the Welsh government. After a lovely day at the bay, we headed home to London and arrived after dark. As much as I loved touring Wales, I am happy to be back in London, as it feels like home.

The Plague's Revenge

Hello Fashionators!

Hope you're having a lovely week! I want to apologize for the (accidental) lie I told you in my last post. I promised photos and details and then I never posted. I am so sorry I neglected you this way, but it really isn't my fault, I promise!

Friday afternoon at work I began to feel tired and run down, but it wasn't the normal Friday afternoon slump- I really felt bad. The ladies in the office noticed I felt unwell, so I went home quite early. My boyfriend grabbed us dinner to go and I ate in his flat, but was so incredibly exhausted. We planned on watching a basketball game together, but I ended up falling asleep on his couch before 20:00. When he work me up around 23:00, I felt like I was dying. My body ached all over and my throat stung. He walked me to my room and tucked me in for a long nights sleep.

Sadly, I was feeling much worse Saturday morning and had a fever. It felt very similar to the plague I contracted a month ago around Valentine's day, and assumed it would be the same 48-hour bug. That was not the case. I finally went to the pharmacy to get stronger meds on Monday and have spent the last five days in bed with hand sanitizer, copious amounts of hot tea, vapor rub, throat lozenges, and day nurse.

These past few days have been torture- not because of how I felt (though I was in a bit of pain), but because I was dying of boredom. I am not your average 20-something college student. Netflix marathons and staying in bed sounds like a form of cruel and unusual punishment. Having people do my grocery shopping for me makes me feel like a dependent, needy parasite. I hate the social consequences of being sick. I spent most of my time sleeping or editing photos. Feeling unproductive is painful for me, so I took this opportunity to make a Flickr, a LinkedIn, and edit some old photos that I took on old holidays but never got around to putting through Lightroom.

I plan on returning to work tomorrow, though I still don't feel great, I feel decent enough to return. The only symptoms now are headache, congestion, and a dry throat, but the dry throat is a result of the pseudoephedrine in my medicine.

My boyfriend and I have plans to travel to Wales this weekend, though I do not know if I will be able to go- but I will do everything possible to make it!

I know this post is dull without pictures, so here is a link to my Flickr, which features photos that have been shown on my blog as well as a few new ones.

Fairy Dust

Hello Fashionators!

Happy Thursday! I hope everyone had a lovely day! Yesterday I spent the morning working, editing my LinkedIn, things of that sort. In the afternoon, I took a trip to Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park. I spent the entire afternoon exploring he Serpentine Gallery, The Serpentine Sackler Gallery, and surrounding statues and memorials in the park. It was such a beautiful day that I didn't even need a coat! I was taking the central line back to my flat when the train stopped at Oxford Circle, as there was a passenger incident at the next station, and the line would be stopped until the investigation was finished. Knowing that this would take ages, I stepped off the train and began walking to my flat. Though it was a bit of a long walk, I really enjoyed being able to walk in the sunshine and stroll down Oxford Street.

Last night I didn't post because I got back quite late from seeing Wicked at the Apollo and Victoria Theatre. I loosely knew the premise of the musical, but was quite unsure what to expect. The play is about the early life of Glinda, The Good Witch, and Elphaba, The Wicked Witch of the West, from the film The Wizard of Oz. The plot is set within the "world" that was constructed by the film and has a significant overlap in characters. The play is a view into how Elphaba and Glenda met, how their relationship evolved, and the history of Oz before Dorothy comes along. The plot was overall good, though there were a few plot points that strongly clashed with the film, but I won't tell you, as that would absolutely ruin the plot for my lovely fashionators who have yet to enjoy this production.

The set was one of the most elaborate I'd seen, only being surpassed by the interactive set of The Drowned Man. I was very impressed with the way the set changed quickly and seamlessly. Costuming was phenomenal and incredibly detailed. The costumes were strongly constructed (easy to see from the fourth row of the stalls), elaborate, and had a variety of textures in each costume, which made them absolutely delicious to see on the stage. The lighting and visual effects were obviously the by-product of a generous budget and lots of technical skill. An orchestra provided the gorgeous music scores and many sound effects.

The decent plot and strong visuals were great, but were nothing compared to the talent of the main two actresses. Elphaba was played by Willemijn Verkaik, a Dutch actress. I'm not sure I can even describe her performance without resorting to elementary phrases such as "incredible", "beyond words", and "you simply need to see it for yourself to understand", but unfortunately, there are literally no words to captivate how moving her performance was. In a large, flashy production like Wicked, only good actors- not great- are needed to attract an audience. Fortunately, Elphaba was played by an incredible actress. Her understanding of the character and her commitment to every aspect of Elphaba was beyond believable. I don't know if I have ever seen such a believable performance- I felt like I really understood Elphaba as a person when I left the theatre. Her singing voice is naturally beautiful, but she captivated so much emotion and power when she sang. Her vocals are easily better than all the artists on the Billboard Hot 100 list right now. In the number Defying Gravity I had chill bumps all over (in a stuffy theatre) and was emotionally tired after experiencing that moment with her. Her performance was one of the best I have ever seen.

Glinda (the good witch) was played by the stand-by actress Sophie Linder-Lee last night. I wouldn't have thought of her as an understudy if I hadn't gone to the website and looked today. It actually never crossed my mind that the Glinda I saw last night was not the actress who played Glinda every night. Her sass and dazzle made the character of Glinda, a blonde and ditzy young lady, an entirely adorable and lovable character. With the wrong delivery or energy, Glinda could easily appear to be an evil, spoiled brat who is a shallow and self-centered. She had a gorgeous soprano voice that beautifully carried through the theatre. She performed her musical numbers with amazing energy and many touches that made Glinda very personable and kept the audience giggling. Glinda also had an amazing shoe collection while at University. It has nothing to do with the plot, but it made me love her even more, because shoes make everything more enjoyable.

Speaking of shoes, I spent my day in the most wonderful way! I was in a meeting all day with Upper Street. Sounds terribly corporate and dreadful, right? Absolutely not! I had the most splendid day with an amazing group of women. We ate vanilla fairy cake and sipped tea, enjoyed a lunch of pizza in the back garden, took group photos, and learned how to spread our fairy dust to keep improving ourselves and the company. It was one of the most inspiring experiences I've ever had. I left my camera at work (oops), but will be posting photos tomorrow of my... uhm.... outfit for today. I got a bit of help from Julia accessorizing!

I would love to post the rest of my photos from my trip to Paris, but as I just stated, I left my camera at the office and kind of need it to get the photos. Oopsies! I guess you'll just have to check the Fascinator tomorrow! Have an amazing Friday- it's almost the weekend!

Stepping Out In Prada & Paris in Photos

Hello Fashionators!

I hope everyone had a lovely Tuesday! I had a very busy day that has left me quite tired. My morning began with me losing my pre-paid Oyster card, which meant that I was going to have to pay extra for tube fare *cringe*. Since I had left my flat so early, I decided to return and look for my Oyster card. I was certain that I had left it in my coat pocket from yesterday and that finding it would take no time at all. When I scurried into my flat, I didn't find my Oyster card in my pocket. It was also not in my clutch, on my desk, or anywhere else. I turned my room upside down in a matter of minutes in vain- there was no Oyster card to be found. I began frantically searching through my handbag for the fifth time and took everything out of my wallet- including my Oyster card. Yes, my Oyster card was in my wallet where it belonged the entire time. I had accidentally stuck it behind my driver's license, so I couldn't see it. I was glad I didn't have to pay extra for the tube, though felt very silly about the entire situation. I suppose it was my cardio for the day.

My day seemed non-stop: I had class in the morning followed by a luncheon and then headed to work. I had a particularly busy day at Upper Street, but it was very rewarding. There are exciting things happening, so be on the lookout! It'll tickle you pink!

After work I rushed home to change for the reception I attended tonight. I wore a classic white Ralph Lauren cotton blouse, a black pleated skirt, black tights, and my black Prada heels. This was the first time I'd worn my Prada heels, and I was very careful about not scuffing the patent. I refused to walk in them on the street and carried them in the dust bag in my purse until I arrived at the venue. Perhaps I'm paranoid, but I really want them to stay looking new for as long as possible. I felt very sophisticated in the lower heels, as I usually don very high platforms to compensate for my short stature. I enjoyed meeting the chancellor of my university and hearing about her experiences.

After my hectic day, I came home a changed into cozy clothes and edited photos of my trip to Paris! Because I took so many, here are the photos from just the first two days:
